Description

Eggnog and Croissant French Toast Casserole is the ultimate Christmas morning breakfast! Make ahead and just pop it in the oven in the morning.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 8 mini croissants, or 4 regular (240 grams / 8.5 ounces)
  • 1 1/4 cup eggnog* (300 milliliters)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries, sliced in half (optional)
  • Whipped cream and strawberry or cranberry sauce, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tear day-old stale croissants into large chunks. I used mini croissants, but regular-sized work too. Add half of them to an 8-inch (20 centimeters) round pie pan or square pan.
  2. Drop random small spoonfuls of cream cheese over, and top with halved cranberries.
  3. Layer the rest of the torn croissants on top, and add another layer of cream cheese and cranberries.
  4. Whisk eggnog, eggs, salt, and orange zest together. Pour over the bread. Sprinkle with extra orange zest if desired.
  5. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and chill for 3+ hours, preferably overnight.
  6. Preheat oven to 350F° (175C°). Remove the pan from the refrigerator. Bake uncovered for about 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown. If you think it browns too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil for a while.
  7. Serve with your favorite toppings, like whipped cream, crème anglaise, fresh fruit, strawberry sauce or cranberry sauce.
