Prosciutto Pear and Manchego Appetizer

These prosciutto pear and manchego appetizer or tapas bites offer a beautiful combination of sweet, salty, and tangy flavors in a bite-sized package. Featuring crisp slices of juicy pear, the rich and nutty taste of Manchego cheese, savory and salty prosciutto, and a finishing drizzle of tangy balsamic glaze. It's simple, yet so delicious.

This appetizer is perfect for any occasion-whether you're hosting a formal dinner party or just want to elevate your next casual gathering. This draws inspiration from Spanish tapas, flavorful bites typically enjoyed with a glass of wine. It's also a great choice for a cheese and cracker night, with dishes like hot honey baked brie.

 

It is a perfect example of how tapas can feature simple ingredients that, together, create complex flavors. 

 

Ingredients

 

  • Manchego Cheese: A firm, nutty cheese made from sheep's milk in the La Mancha region of Spain. Manchego is rich and slightly sweet, providing a creamy contrast to the salty prosciutto and crisp pear. My favorite firm cheese!
  • Pears: Pears add a delicate sweetness and juiciness to the appetizer. Their fresh, light flavor pairs beautifully with the richer, saltier ingredients. Make sure to choose slightly firm pears, such as Conference, Bosc or Anjou, that will hold their shape when sliced.
  • Prosciutto: This thinly sliced, cured Italian ham is known for its salty, savory flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. It adds a layer of umami richness to balance out the sweet pears. I also often use Norwegian cured ham, the Strandaskinke. 
  • Lemon Juice: A squeeze of lemon juice adds a fresh, citrusy brightness and prevents the pears from browning, while also enhancing the overall flavor.
  • Balsamic Glaze: Balsamic glaze adds a sweet and tangy finish that ties the ingredients together. Its syrupy texture is perfect for drizzling and adds a luxurious touch to the presentation.

Instructions

 

Prepare the pears: Slice the pears into thin wedges, about ¼ inch thick*. Keep the slices consistent in size to ensure even bites. Squeeze lemon juice over the pear slices to prevent them from browning and add a slight tartness.

*  You may have noticed that not all the pieces are this size on my platter. That is because there is a lovely alternative presentation! You could also cut them in cubes, the size of your Manchego cube, and place them all on a skewer instead. It's often easier to eat but requires some skewers.

 

Cut the Manchego: Cut the Manchego cheese into pieces similar to your pear. The cheese should be thin enough to not overpower the pear but thick enough to deliver a satisfying bite.

 

Assemble the bites: Place a slice of Manchego on top of each pear slice. Then, take a strip of prosciutto and wrap it around the pear and cheese, securing them together. The prosciutto should hold everything in place while adding a pop of salty flavor.

 

Drizzle with balsamic glaze: Once all the bites are assembled, arrange them on a serving platter. Drizzle the balsamic glaze lightly over the top of each bite for a sweet-tangy finish.

Serve immediately: Serve these tapas bites fresh to preserve the crisp texture of the pear and the flavor of the ingredients. If you need to make them ahead of time, store them in the fridge but drizzle the balsamic glaze just before serving.

 

Substitutions

 

As I've mentioned in other simple recipes, providing substitutions for such recipes ends up in completely new recipes, Not that I'm complaining! 

 

Fruit alternatives: I usually make this appetizer all year round, but I tend to switch out the fruit depending on the season. In the summer I really love to use honeydew melon. For other fall fruits, apples and figs are great alternatives. 

 

Cheese alternatives: If Manchego is not available, you can substitute it with other firm cheeses like Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, or Asiago. However, these are quite strong, so I'd make a smaller piece of cheese compared to the fruit. For a milder flavor, try Gruyère or aged cheddar.

 

Prosciutto alternatives: Norwegian Strandaskinke, Serrano ham, or even salami can make a great appetizer. If you're looking for a pork-free option, you can replace prosciutto with thinly sliced smoked turkey, or a lettuce leaf for vegetarian, or leave it out entirely for a lighter, cheese-focused bite.

Variations

 

Make it spicy by drizzling hot honey on the pear and prosciutto bites. A spicy kick that contrasts with the sweet pears and rich cheese.

 

Or (more like and), sprinkle on some toasted nuts and herbs when serving. Pistachios and walnuts are my favorite nuts for this, and thyme and rosemary are my preferred herbs.

 

Equipment

 

No special equipment is needed. A sharp knife, cutting board and a plate for presentation is all you really need. If you want to serve them on skewers, then you also need those. Bamboo skewers are my favorites.

 

Storage

 

These are best to make right before serving. However, you can make them a couple of hours before, cover them in plastic wrap, and store them in the refrigerator. Drizzle with the balsamic glaze right before serving. 

 

Just because they are best right before serving, doesn't mean you have to throw the leftovers away! They are still delicious the next day. The pears will soften up and lose their crispiness. Store in the refrigerator for a maximum of 1 day.

Expert Tips

 

  1. Choose firm pears: Make sure the pears are ripe but still firm, so they hold up well when sliced and paired with the cheese and prosciutto.
  2. Quality ingredients: Use high-quality Manchego, prosciutto, and balsamic glaze for the best flavor. Since this appetizer has few ingredients, their quality really shines through.
  3. Balance the flavors: Don't overdo it on the prosciutto, as it can overpower the delicate flavors of the pear and Manchego. A thin slice is enough to complement the other ingredients.
